APPROVED ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT STANDARDS AT MURPHY ENVIRONMENTAL FACILITIES

Both the Murphy Environmental facilities - at Hollywood and Gormanston - have in place approved Environmental Management Systems (or 'EMS'). Our systems are certified by an independent body, Certification Europe, to ISO14001:2004, the international standard for EMS. Hollywood was the first private landfill in Ireland to attain ISO14001, and we were delighted when the Minister for the Environment presented us with our award for Gormanston also.

Mr. Dick Roche, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Heritage & Local Government visited Drogheda on Friday April 7th 2006 to present Murphy Environmental with a second ISO 14001 Award, the International Standard certificate for Environmental Management Systems, achieved at their Gormanston facility.

This award presentation represents only the third such award of this standard achieved at an EPA-licensed landfill in Ireland and Murphys already hold one of the others for their Hollywood facility. Murphy Environmental is the only private landfill operator in the Ireland to achieve this certification, awarded by Certification Europe who are accredited by INAB (Irish National Accreditation Board).

Minister Roche speaking at the presentation in April 2005 to Murphy Environmental commended them for their commitment to achieving high standards. Minister Roche stated that the achievements of Murphy Environmental "demonstrated to all the other operators in the sector what can be done, and what must be done" in terms of commitment to managing the environment.

Speaking at the 2006 Award Ceremony Minister Roche commended Murphy Environmental as "providing a consistent and successful approach to environmental management" and noted that they have "raised the bar for other companies in the sector". Minister Roche also acknowledged the commitment of Murphy Environmental to local and community projects and to service which was recognised by Drogheda Chamber with an Award for Service Excellence in 2005.

General Manager Patricia Rooney, speaking at last year's Award Ceremony, made a commitment to achieve this standard in Gormanston and is delighted that this exemplary standard has been reached. Murphy Environmental were thrilled that the Minister has seen fit to return to present this award to them. His presence is viewed as a clear signal of his support for those in the Waste Sector who are striving to operate at the highest level for the protection of the environment within their commercial enterprise.

ISO14001 has been embraced as the preferred model for environmental management and improved performance worldwide. The standard requires organisations to define their environmental policy and review their activities, products, processes and services, in order to identify the environmental issues and associated impacts which can be controlled, reduced or eliminated to drive improved environmental performance. An effective Management System provides an organisation's top management with a 'road map' which allows them to manage environmental issues effectively. Third-party registration and auditing of environmental management systems provides confidence that environmental issues are being managed in accordance with internationally recognised standards and procedures.

FIRST PRIVATELY-OWNED LANDFILL TO ACHIEVE INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS AWARD

Mr. Dick Roche, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government presented Murphy Environmental the ISO14001 certificate for Environmental Management Systems, on behalf of the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) at a ceremony in Balbriggan on 29th April 2005.

The standard for environmental excellence was awarded to Murphy Environmental in recognition of the environmental management system established at its inert landfill site located at Hollywood, Naul, North County Dublin. The facility, which holds an EPA Waste Licence, is the first private-sector landfill in Ireland to achieve the prestigious award.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, the Minister commended Murphy Environmental on their success, and said the achievement "demonstrated to all the other operators in the sector what can be done, and what must be done" in terms of commitment to environmental excellence. He added, "that as a nation, and as an industry, we must all start aiming high". The Minister announced new, tougher action against illegal operators and said "the law applies equally to everybody in this country, whether a big powerful corporation or a small operator". The Minister said of Murphy Environmental "you are prepared to go the extra mile and are showing leadership at a very, very high level", and "that commitment to excellence is now paying off".

Seamus Murphy, M.D., and General Manager, Patricia Rooney, acknowledged the contribution of all staff in making the system workable and applicable to day-to-day operations and the benefits of an Environmental Management System to implement effective management procedures, staff involvement and competitive advantage.

Patricia Rooney stated that "we have invested heavily in the Hollywood facility to obtain and meet the requirements of our EPA Waste Licence, and now I can say with some pride that our commitment to excellence has paid off by achieving compliance to ISO14001. This public recognition of our pledge to work to the highest environmental standards is particularly important for a waste company, as the sector has been under the spotlight recently". Patricia added that Murphy Environmental was delighted to be the first privately-operated landfill in the country to achieve certification to ISO14001 and looks forward to greater business advantage.
